The Arrest and Charges
Colts wide receiver Keenan Allen is facing a minimum three game NFL suspension. This comes after he was formally charged last week with two misdemeanor offenses. The charges stem from a drunk driving arrest in downtown Indianapolis last month.
The NFL collective bargaining agreement mandates a three game suspension for these offenses. However, the suspension could be longer because of Allen's high intoxication level. Police officers on the scene reported that Allen had a .224 blood alcohol level, which is three times the legal limit. This high level triggered a more serious Class A misdemeanor charge under Indiana law.
What Happened That Night
An Indianapolis police sergeant encountered Allen at 1 a.m. while conducting a traffic investigation. Allen was parked in a no parking zone, which prompted the officer to approach the vehicle. According to the police report, the officer smelled a strong odor of alcohol when speaking to the veteran wide receiver.
Allen is 34 years old and joined the Colts in August on a one year deal. The six time Pro Bowler had six catches for 32 yards in the Colts' Week 1 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
Legal Process and Next Steps
The veteran receiver is not expected to miss any playing time while his case goes through the courts. Colts coach Shane Steichen said the team is letting the legal process play out. The NFL is also expected to wait for the legal case to finish before handing down any discipline.
The next step in the legal case is an attorney conference scheduled for October 26.
