Responsible betting
Betting should only ever be entertainment. We would rather lose a reader than see one lose their rent. Here is how to keep it under control, and where to get help in Kenya.
01Rules that protect you
- Decide your budget before you bet and stop when it is gone. Never top up from M-Pesa to chase it.
- Keep every stake the same size. Raising the stake after a loss is how small losses become big ones.
- Never chase losses. A losing run does not mean a win is coming.
- Do not bet when you are angry, stressed, drunk or bored.
- Never borrow to bet, and never use a mobile loan to fund a bet.
- Big multi bets and jackpots have tiny chances of winning. Treat any stake on them as spent.
02Warning signs
- Betting more money or more often than you planned.
- Hiding betting from your family or lying about losses.
- Borrowing money, selling things or skipping bills to bet.
- Feeling restless or angry when you cannot bet.
- Betting to win back money you have already lost.
03Tools you can use now
- Licensed bookmakers in Kenya let you set deposit limits, take a break or exclude yourself from your account. Ask your bookmaker how.
- Remove betting apps from your phone and turn off betting messages.
- Ask someone you trust to help you manage money for a while.
04Help in Kenya
- The Gambling Regulatory Authority of Kenya regulates betting and handles player protection. Its official website is gra.go.ke.
- The Responsible Gaming Federation of Kenya offers free information and support at responsiblegaming.or.ke.
- Gamblers Anonymous at www.gamblersanonymous.org and Gambling Therapy at www.gamblingtherapy.org offer free online support and meetings.
- Talking to a doctor, a counsellor or someone you trust is a strong first step.
05Under 18
Betting is illegal for anyone under 18 in Kenya. If a young person in your home bets, lock betting apps and talk to them.
