No More Excuses
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has warned his players they must not let recent refereeing decisions ruin their season. The Red Devils suffered a painful 1-0 defeat to local rivals Manchester City last weekend, a match defined by a major refereeing error.
Chief refereeing officer Howard Webb admitted he was disappointed that Erling Haaland's winning goal was allowed to stand. Enzo Fernandez was in an offside position during the play. Carrick welcomed the honesty from the officials but admitted that the apology does not change the result.
"The apology doesn't mean an awful lot," Carrick said. "I can appreciate and I respect it for them putting their hands up and saying 'we got that wrong'. I think it happens, it does happen."
Carrick added that his team must focus on what they can control. He wants his players to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible.
Tough Week for United
The defeat to City was particularly hard to take because United failed to score against ten men. City midfielder Phil Foden was sent off in the 23rd minute, but United struggled to create clear opportunities. Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford both hit the post, and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made an important save to deny Bryan Mbeumo in stoppage time.
Things got worse on Wednesday night. United threw away a 2-0 lead at Old Trafford to lose 3-2 against Brighton. The defeat knocked them out of the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle. It was also the first time United have lost at home to Brighton in 50 years.
This marked consecutive home defeats for Carrick since he took charge in January. It follows another recent disappointment where United threw away leads to draw 2-2 at Everton.
Some fans are questioning if the team lacks a killer instinct. Carrick dismissed the idea of a deep issue, saying it is easy to overreact after a bad week. He wants his team to understand what went wrong and correct it immediately.
