Knee injury stops Missi in Salt Lake City
New Orleans Pelicans starting center Yves Missi suffered a left leg injury on Friday night against the Utah Jazz. The big man was carried off the court in Salt Lake City during the second quarter and could not return to the game.
The incident happened with six minutes and 30 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Zion Williamson drove to the basket for a shot that was blocked by Jaxson Hayes. Williamson then fell directly into Missi's leg. The Cameroon native immediately went down on the baseline, holding his knee in pain.
Technical foul and injury evaluation
Missi could not put any weight on his left leg as he was helped to the locker room. Shortly after leaving the court, he was officially ruled out for the rest of the contest with a left knee injury. Medical staff will reevaluate him on Saturday to check the damage.
Tempers flared on the court right after the play. Utah player Keyonte George hit a three pointer at the other end. New Orleans coach Jamahl Mosley ran onto the floor to protest the lack of a foul call on the previous play. The official gave Mosley a technical foul for his reaction.
A tough blow after a strong start
Losing Missi is disappointing for New Orleans after his solid start to the campaign. The center had a great performance in the team's season opening 123-120 loss against Indiana. In that game, he put up 13 points, 15 rebounds, five assists, and three blocks.
That performance was a big step up from last season, when Missi averaged 5.7 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Now, the team must wait for the results of his Saturday evaluation to see how much time he will miss.
