A Classic Rivalry Renewed
The classic rivalry between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox is back in the postseason. The two teams will meet at Yankee Stadium starting on Tuesday for a best of three wild card series. The winner of this matchup will move on to face Tampa Bay in the American League Division Series.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone talked about the upcoming matchup. He said, "Obviously a tremendous rivalry. The Red Sox had a resurgent season after a really difficult start. I think they're really good." Boone added that he is confident his team can move on if they play their game and pitch well.
New York won the regular season series between the two teams 7-6 this year.
Boston's Dramatic Turnaround
Boston had a difficult start to the year. The team fired manager Alex Cora and five coaches on April 25 after a 10-17 start. Tracy was promoted from Triple-A Worcester to interim manager and was recently given a three year contract.
Through June 24, Boston was last in the AL East with a 32-46 record. However, a four game sweep of the Yankees at Fenway Park turned their season around. It started a 32-5 run that included their first 15 game winning streak since 1946. They clinched their playoff spot by coming back from a three run deficit to beat the Cubs.
The Red Sox might be without Willson Contreras. He leads the team with 27 home runs and 81 RBIs but is uncertain for the series after getting hit on his right hand by a pitch on September 17.
History on the Line
This is not the first time these teams have met in October. The Yankees beat Boston in the 1999 and 2003 AL Championship Series, as well as last year's Wild Card Series. Boston came back from a 3-0 deficit to beat the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS, and also won postseason matchups in 2018 and 2021.
In last year's series, Boston won the first game with Garrett Crochet throwing 11 strikeouts. The Yankees advanced by winning Game 3 4-0 behind 12 strikeouts from Cam Schlittler.
Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony is excited for the clash. He said, "They're a great team. We're a great team. We always play good baseball against them. They play good baseball against us."
