Yankees dominant in sweep
The New York Yankees are moving on in the playoffs after a dominant two game sweep of the Boston Red Sox. New York completed the sweep with a 9-2 victory on Wednesday night, outscoring their rivals 18-2 across the two matches.
Max Fried led the way on the mound, allowing just three hits over six innings to earn his first postseason win since the 2021 World Series. The Yankees pitching completely shut down the Boston batters throughout the series. The Red Sox hit just .117 over the two games, managing only seven hits in 60 at bats while striking out 18 times. This is the second straight year that the Yankees have eliminated the Red Sox in the first round.
Big sixth inning seals the win
The game was close early on, with the Yankees holding a slim 2-1 lead after Willson Contreras homered for Boston. That home run ended a 26 inning postseason scoreless streak for the Red Sox. However, New York blew the game open in the sixth inning with a six run burst that started when Spencer Jones reached base on a wild pitch while striking out.
Luis Garcia Jr. had a great night with three hits in his first postseason start, including a home run in the fourth inning. Cody Bellinger was the star of the sixth inning surge, hitting a three run home run to push the lead to 8-1. Bellinger finished the game with four RBIs. New York will now face the American League East champions, the Tampa Bay Rays, in the next round starting on Saturday.
