Will Aaron Judge play?
The New York Yankees will finish the regular season with the second-best record in the American League. They have scored the second-most runs, hit the most home runs, and recorded the best ERA in the league. However, manager Aaron Boone faces many questions before submitting his postseason roster.
The biggest question is the health of captain Aaron Judge. He missed 84 games this season with a rib stress fracture. Just as he was getting his timing back, he suffered a calf strain on September 16. Boone described it as a moderate grade strain and said the team is planning as if Judge will not be available, though he has not ruled him out. Judge was unhappy with this description, noting that everyone heals differently, and stated he still intends to play. He received a PPP injection on Monday to help healing and has resumed physical activity, but has not taken a swing yet.
Stanton and the infield puzzle
Judge is not the only player trying to return. Giancarlo Stanton has been out since late April with a calf strain. He suffered two setbacks during his recovery but recently faced live pitching. Trent Grisham is also working his way back from a hamstring injury.
The infield is another puzzle. With Jazz Chisholm Jr. back from the injured list, the Yankees must decide how to use Anthony Volpe, who has been playing second base. Third base is also wide open. Ryan McMahon, Amed Rosario, and Jose Caballero are all options, each bringing different strengths and weaknesses to the lineup. Boone has admitted that there are more roster decisions to work through this year than in previous seasons.
