Defensive disaster in the first inning
The New York Yankees knew they needed clean baseball to beat the Tampa Bay Rays. Instead, they suffered a rough outing in Game 2 of the American League Division Series. The Yankees committed four errors, including three in the first inning alone, leading to a 5-2 loss at Tropicana Field. Second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. and third baseman Ryan McMahon were among those involved in the early defensive miscues that gifted the Rays an opening run.
Manager Aaron Boone admitted the team beat themselves in many ways during the contest. Pitcher Cam Schlittler was forced to work through a messy start because of the mistakes behind him. The Yankees now trail 0-2 in the series and return home facing elimination.
Offensive struggles and rare homers
On the offensive side, the Yankees struggled to get things going against the Tampa Bay pitching staff. Freddy Peralta kept New York hitless through the first three innings. Ben Rice finally sparked the offense with a solo home run in the fourth inning, which was the team's first hit of the night and first run of the series.
Rice added another solo home run in the eighth inning, making him the first player in franchise history to record multiple multi-home run games in a single postseason. However, the rest of the lineup failed to generate enough offense to overcome the early defensive mistakes and a four-run fifth inning by the Rays.
