Yamal Makes History Early
Barcelona secured a 3-0 win against Aston Villa at Camp Nou on Tuesday in heavy rain. The victory ended the English side's perfect start in the Champions League this season. Both teams now sit on nine points in the standings.
Lamine Yamal opened the scoring after seven minutes. A mistake by Villa midfielder João Gomes allowed the youngster to curl a shot past goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. That strike took Yamal to 14 Champions League goals, moving him past Kylian Mbappé as the highest scoring teenager in the history of the competition.
Raphinha Double Secures Win
Raphinha doubled the lead in the 52nd minute when his shot deflected off Pau Torres and wrong footed Suzuki. The Brazilian striker added his second goal later in the half, turning in a cross from João Cancelo. Raphinha now has 19 goals in 13 appearances this season.
That second goal took Raphinha to 23 Champions League goals for Barcelona. He is now tied with Robert Lewandowski, leaving only Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez ahead of him. Raphinha also leads all players in Europe's top five leagues for total goals scored across all competitions.
Villa Miss Chances in Spain
Villa created good opportunities despite the defeat. Matty Cash and Gomes both had chances, while Johan Manzambi shot wide. Striker Nicolas Jackson was denied in a one on one situation by Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García when the score was 1-0.
It was a disappointing 55th birthday for Villa manager Unai Emery. Across 24 years in management, Emery has managed 15 matches at Camp Nou and won just once. Villa had previously beaten Club Brugge, Fenerbahce, and Viking FK in Europe before this trip to Spain.
Barcelona Momentum Continues
Barcelona brought pressure to the Villa defence throughout the match. Fermín López and Yamal both missed late chances to score a fourth goal, while Suzuki made a good save from López after Boubacar Kamara lost possession.
Hansi Flick's side bounced back from recent losses to Paris Saint Germain and Real Madrid. After a 6-1 win over Alaves on Saturday, Barcelona now prepare for a top of the table match against Atlético Madrid in LaLiga on Sunday.
