Limited playing time for Brazilian winger
Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has insisted that teenage winger Estevao will get his opportunity to shine later this season. The 19 year old Brazil international has found regular playing time hard to come by recently. He has logged just 172 minutes on the pitch so far during the current campaign.
Estevao has managed only two starts under Alonso up to this point. His lack of minutes was highlighted again on Wednesday evening. He was an unused substitute when Chelsea suffered a defeat on penalties against Liverpool in their Carabao Cup quarterfinal tie.
Alonso addresses manager responsibility
Addressing reporters in his post match news conference, Alonso spoke candidly about the young attacker's lack of action. He explained that he understands the teenager's situation and acknowledged that the player could certainly be happier with more game time.
Alonso pointed out that every footballer wants to play and feel part of the team. He emphasized that Chelsea have been involved in several intense fixtures lately, but maintained that opportunities will arise for everyone as the season progresses. Alonso confirmed he is sure Estevao will have his moment, adding that it is his own responsibility to deal with the squad.
Recent history and upcoming fixture
Estevao previously missed the 2026 World Cup because of a hamstring injury. However, he showed his quality during the previous campaign. He made 12 Premier League starts and managed to score eight goals in all competitions while working under Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior.
Following their midweek cup elimination, Chelsea do not have long to wait before their next fixture. They return to domestic action on Saturday when they host Manchester United in the Premier League.
