Injury Blow for Contreras in Texas
Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras was forced to leave Thursday night's game against the Texas Rangers in Arlington. The player left the field in the eighth inning after he was hit by a pitch in the area of his right hand. This happened during a game that Boston eventually went on to win 4-3.
The incident occurred just after Wilyer Abreu managed to draw a leadoff walk. At that point in the game, the Rangers were leading 3-1. Texas pitcher Jakob Junis threw a first-pitch sinker that struck Contreras directly.
Contreras walked over to first base and was clearly in a lot of pain. A team trainer came out to examine his hand before he headed back to the dugout. Before he had to leave the field, Contreras was 1-for-3 with a single.
Story Wins It for Boston
Boston responded quickly after losing their first baseman. Just two batters after the injury to Contreras, Trevor Story hit a three-run home run off Jacob Latz to turn the game in Boston's favor. That home run secured the 4-3 victory for the Red Sox.
This was actually the second night in a row that Contreras was hit by a pitch. On Wednesday night, he was also hit by a pitch. That happened after he hit a two-run home run in the first inning of the game. The Red Sox ended up losing that Wednesday matchup 7-3 to the Rangers.
