A Historic Win for Milwaukee
William Contreras has made baseball history by becoming the eighth catcher to earn World Series MVP honors. He helped the small-market Milwaukee Brewers capture their first World Series championship.
Contreras batted .381 during the series and drove in a key run with a double during the 4-1 victory in Game 5 on Wednesday night. Relief pitcher Aaron Ashby praised his teammate after the match, stating that the team is not what it is without him.
Mastering the New System
The postseason also highlighted the catcher's smart use of technology. Contreras made the most of the first World Series featuring the Automated Ball-Strike challenge system.
He successfully won 10 out of 13 appeals during the series. This sharp decision-making behind the plate supported the Milwaukee pitching staff throughout the playoff run.
Family and National Pride
After receiving the MVP award, Contreras shared an emotional moment with his older brother. Willson Contreras, who plays as the first baseman for the Boston Red Sox, won his own World Series title back in 2016.
William also celebrated with a Venezuelan flag draped over his shoulders. He reflected on his home country and mentioned the historic victory when Venezuela won the World Baseball Classic earlier in March.
An Impressive Season
The star catcher reached new heights over the full year. The 28-year-old three-time All-Star finished the regular season batting .270 with 18 home runs and a career-best 94 RBIs, helping the Brewers secure their fourth consecutive NL Central title.
His postseason success started early. He batted .444 with two solo home runs in the Division Series against San Diego, followed by a .357 average and one home run in the Championship Series sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
