The numbers behind the shotgun
The Tennessee passing offense is one of the least explosive attacks in the league this season. Tennessee has played 363 offensive snaps so far. Of those snaps, 200 have come from the shotgun formation, resulting in seven explosive pass completions. By comparison, three of the 163 plays from under center led to a pass completion of at least 20 yards. Overall, the team ranks next to last in passing plays of 20 yards or more with 10.
Quarterback Cam Ward spoke about the formation. I think it really simplifies what we want to get out of the defense, the certain looks that we want to get in and out of, Ward said. He added that it helps everybody get in the rhythm, whether it is the run game or passing the ball.
Advantages of lining up under center
Under-center dropbacks allow the quarterback timing to match the receiver routes. It opens up the full route tree and allows for more deep passing concepts. It also helps the run game because it is less predictable. Running backs get a wider view because they line up deeper in the backfield behind the quarterback instead of beside him in the shotgun.
Offensive linemen get an advantage from under center as well. They can get to their spots more easily since it takes a tick longer for the quarterback to take the snap before dropping back and handing it to the back. The Titans have had 10 explosive runs of 10 yards or more this season, and eight of those came from under center. Rookie linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. noted the difficulty it creates for defenders. When teams go under center and pass, it is more play-action passes, deep out-breakers, and deep-in breakers, Hill said.
Balancing the offense
Offensive coordinator Brian Daboll understands that not all situations allow for true under-center play because down-and-distance has an impact. Last week in a 26-20 win over the Colts, the Titans faced third-and-long of seven yards or more six times, and all of those plays came from the shotgun.
Daboll explained that it is important offensively to try to stay balanced the best they can. Being under center gives the team many advantages regarding the run, play-action pass, and naked bootlegs. Next up, the Titans will host the Cleveland Browns.
