The contract standoff

The Pittsburgh Steelers traded star cornerback Joey Porter Jr. to the Dallas Cowboys this past week. The move ended a standoff that lasted for months. The main reason for the trade was the contract philosophy of the Steelers.

Pittsburgh refuses to offer fully guaranteed money in the second year of contracts. They are one of the few teams, alongside Green Bay and Cincinnati, to hold this stance. While star pass rusher T.J. Watt and wide receiver DK Metcalf received second year guarantees, the Steelers refused to give one to Porter.

The Steelers did offer Porter a deal worth 28 million dollars in average annual value. It had significant injury guarantees, but not fully guaranteed money in the second year. Porter wanted the security of a long term contract rather than a large one year payment.

The move to Dallas

Porter sat out of training camp and was still ramping up when the season began. He knew he would not play for Pittsburgh without a new contract. However, he was ready to play for a new team.

The Cowboys and the Detroit Lions were the two main teams trying to get him. Dallas secured the cornerback after the Steelers accepted a future second round draft pick as part of the trade. This was the only serious offer Pittsburgh received.

Porter has no injury designation for his upcoming game. Dallas executive vice president Stephen Jones said on Friday that the team thinks Porter will get snaps.
