Why Manchester United fans should lower their title expectations

Manchester United are stuck in a familiar cycle of false hope and heavy disappointment, but their true level is not as bad as recent results suggest.

The repeating cycle at Old Trafford

For the past ten years, following Manchester United has felt like watching the same movie over and over. A bad season happens, the manager gets fired, a new coach comes in, and results improve. Fans and former players start whispering about winning the Premier League. Then reality hits hard, expectations are missed, and the coach is shown the door. After finishing third last season, the club earned only six points from their first six matches. A recent draw against 10-man Tottenham led to their worst league start since 1986, restarting the cycle of panic among supporters.

Money, revenues, and the changing league

Analysis of the club used to be simple because United was comfortably the richest team in the country. Over twenty-four seasons, they recorded the highest revenues of any club ten times. However, since the 2019 to 2020 season, United have fallen outside the top four revenue spots three times. Other Premier League teams have also risen in talent and financial power, with players joining clubs like Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest instead of traditional European giants. Despite poor management and on-field volatility, the club still maintains a high financial floor.

What the numbers actually say

Looking at data from Transfermarkt, the squad is valued as the fifth-most valuable in the Premier League. Estimates from FBref show they carry the fourth-highest wage bill in the competition, matching their fourth-highest revenues in recent accounting. Given these metrics, baseline expectations for the club should realistically hover around fourth or fifth place in the table, rather than fighting for the title every single year.
