A Mother's Dream of Anfield
Kylian Mbappe has shared how close he was to signing for Liverpool in 2017. When he was preparing to leave Monaco, the Premier League side made a serious attempt to sign the young forward. His mother was a massive supporter of the move.
Mbappe explained that his mother visited Anfield during the early stages of the negotiations. She fell in love with the club, the stadium, and the people. She even watched matches by herself to get a feel for the atmosphere and imagine her son playing on that pitch.
Jurgen Klopp's Private Jet Talks
Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who is now the Germany manager, previously spoke about the extreme efforts the club made to sign Mbappe. He described it as the most expensive non transfer the club ever attempted.
Liverpool sent a private jet with five rooms to fly from Blackpool to Nice to meet Mbappe and his family. To keep the meetings secret, the jet flew in circles while they talked and ate a meal. Mbappe remembered the flight well. He told Klopp that he did not need to convince him because Liverpool was already a great club, but he had other options.
Why PSG Won the Race
Despite his mother constantly telling him he should join Liverpool, Mbappe chose to stay in France. He was only 18 years old at the time and wanted to make a name for himself in his home country before moving abroad.
He decided to join Paris Saint-Germain because he was born and raised in Paris. He felt there was no better feeling than showing he could become a star in his own home town. He joined PSG on loan before completing a permanent move for 180 million euros.
Success and Future Moves
Mbappe went on to achieve great success after his decision. He won the World Cup with France as a teenager in 2018. He also became the tournament's top scorer of all time, passing stars like Lionel Messi and Miroslav Klose, as France reached the semifinal stage before being beaten by eventual champions Spain.
After spending several years with Paris Saint-Germain, Mbappe finally left the French capital. He completed a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid in 2024.
