Playing Time Like the World's Best

American soccer fans are watching something historic. Cavan Sullivan, a 16 year old playing in Major League Soccer, is performing at a level rarely seen in global football. While many young players are eased into professional football, Sullivan is already a key figure for his team.

He has played 1,675 league minutes in MLS during his age 16 season. To put that into perspective, very few players in history have managed this much playing time at his age. If you look at the top five European leagues and the next 14 strongest leagues in the world, only a handful of players have ever played more minutes before their age 17 season. This elite group includes stars like Eduardo Camavinga, Gavi, Lamine Yamal, and Freddy Adu, who leads the pack with 5,448 minutes.

Incredible Goal Production

Sullivan is not just getting minutes, he is also producing goals. He currently has 12 goal contributions, which includes seven goals and five assists. In the history of the top five European leagues, only Bojan Krkic had more before his age 17 season with 13. Sullivan is already ahead of Wayne Rooney and Lamine Yamal, who both had 10.

In his eight games since the World Cup, Sullivan has been in red hot form. He has scored six goals and provided four assists in that short period. Only a few players in other competitive leagues, such as Chelsea signing Estevao, Romelu Lukaku, and Endrick, have recorded more goal contributions at this stage of their careers.

More Than Just a Goalscorer

Sullivan is also a brilliant playmaker. He does not just wait near the goal for chances to arrive. He actively moves the ball forward and creates opportunities for his teammates.

He has made 132 passes into the attacking third this season. No other attacking player in his age group comes close to this number. In fact, the only other players with more than 100 passes into the attacking third in similar historical data are midfielders Jude Bellingham with 104 and Gilberto Mora with 109.

Sullivan also ranks second and third in expected assists and expected goals among all players analyzed at age 16 or younger. He is doing this in an MLS league that has grown significantly. The combined transfer value of all 30 MLS clubs is now 1.54 billion euros, making the average match Sullivan plays a very tough test.
