Game 3 pitching plans
The Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians will both turn to openers to begin Game 3 of the American League Division Series on Wednesday. The White Sox are starting lefty Sean Newcomb against Guardians right hander Daniel Espino. The White Sox hold a 2-0 advantage in the best of three series, making it a must win game for the Guardians.
Newcomb has logged four saves this season and started six times. He went 2-5 with a 3.09 ERA this season and posted a 0.84 ERA during his six outings as an opener. Newcomb will face the top of a struggling Cleveland lineup that in Game 2 featured Steven Kwan, Jose Ramirez, and Chase DeLauter.
Rookie steps up for Cleveland
Espino was a surprising choice given the traditional pitching set up of the Guardians. The rookie opened three games during the season, posting a 6.25 ERA. He had a 4.11 ERA over his first 14 big league appearances. He was the first round draft pick in 2019, but injuries sidetracked his development, including two shoulder surgeries.
Guardians manager Steven Vogt explained his choice for the win or go home contest. Vogt said that of all the options in the bullpen, he felt giving the ball to Daniel was the right call. Espino noted that he was recently wishing just to throw a baseball, and now he is starting a Game 3.
