Big Performance from Wembanyama
Victor Wembanyama took a career high 34 shots and scored a season high 43 points on Saturday, leading the San Antonio Spurs to a 121-111 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. The 22 year old star also added five blocks in the victory.
This was the first time the Spurs won a game when Wembanyama took 30 or more shot attempts. He lost the previous two games where he reached that mark, including a loss to the New York Knicks on Christmas Day in 2024 and a loss to Minnesota four days later.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson praised how Wembanyama worked with his teammates, saying it creates real problems for the opposing team.
Dominance Inside and Out
Wembanyama finished with three made shots from deep out of eight attempts, including a corner shot with 2:40 left that extended the lead to 118-107. Twelve of his other 14 made baskets came from two feet or closer, including four dunks and four alley-oops.
Second year guard Dylan Harper added 25 points on 9 of 17 shooting, setting a regular season career high. Harper said Wembanyama was dominant and unstoppable from start to finish.
The performance made Wembanyama the first Spurs player since David Robinson in 1996 to record at least 40 points and five blocks in a game. He is also the first player in the NBA to match those stats since Joel Embiid in 2022.
Team Progress and Streaks
San Antonio used a four guard starting lineup alongside Wembanyama, featuring De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, and Harper. Wembanyama, Fox, and Harper combined to score 90 points. Castle played 22 minutes while fighting through a migraine headache, recording four assists and a steal.
The Spurs dominated on the glass, winning the rebounding battle 49-38. San Antonio has now extended its winning streak to four games, with Wembanyama scoring 36 and 43 points in his last two outings.
Minnesota played without star guard Anthony Edwards because of a knee injury. LaMelo Ball picked up four fouls in the first half, played just 20 minutes, and fouled out with 3:43 left.
