Rooney blasts player attitude
Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has heavily criticized the squad for acting like babies following their 4-1 Champions League defeat away to Como. The heavy loss in Italy has piled further scrutiny on manager Michael Carrick, but Rooney believes the players are hiding behind the manager.
Speaking on The United Stand podcast, Rooney focused his criticism on Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martínez. Both players conducted eye-catching interviews after the game. Fernandes targeted Carrick's game plan, while Martínez pointed the finger at Jason Wilcox. Rooney stated that such public comments will split the squad completely.
Lack of accountability in dressing room
Rooney explained that when Martínez spoke publicly, it was an absolute nightmare that would rip the dressing room apart. He added that Fernandes is now doing the same thing. Rooney noted that Fernandes is going through his worst run of form since arriving at Old Trafford, and suggested the midfielder is putting pressure on others to avoid facing his own poor performances.
According to Rooney, the players are selfish and only care about themselves rather than their teammates, staff, or supporters. He described them as babies throwing toys out of the pram to deflect blame away from their own displays. He urged Fernandes and Martínez to look in the mirror.
Rooney recalled his own playing days under Sir Alex Ferguson. He noted that even during times when he and Ferguson were not speaking, he would still run through a brick wall for him on the pitch. Rooney also called on the board to provide clarity on Carrick's situation at the club.
