Rooney Speaks Out on City Charges
Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has admitted he would not feel comfortable being handed the 2011/12 Premier League medal if Manchester City are stripped of their title. City are currently facing allegations of breaching over 100 league financial rules between 2009 and 2018. If they are found guilty, they could lose the three league titles they won during this nine year period.
The first of those titles was decided on the final day of the 2011/12 season. City famously beat Manchester United to the trophy on goal difference. Some former United players, including Rio Ferdinand, have suggested they should now get those medals, but Rooney does not agree with his former teammate.
United Blew the Title Race
Speaking on the Stick To United podcast, Rooney explained that United did not do enough on the pitch to deserve the trophy that year. He remembered how Sir Alex Ferguson's side let a healthy lead slip in the final weeks of the season.
"I think we were six or seven points clear with four or five games to go and we threw it away," Rooney said. He added that he is happy with the five Premier League titles he won during his career and does not want to receive a new medal 15 years later because City cheated.
Empathy for Manchester City Players
Rooney also expressed sympathy for the players who played for City during that era. He explained that those players worked hard on the pitch to win their matches and believed they had won the league fairly.
Rooney said he would be absolutely devastated if he was in their position and had his medals taken away. He acknowledged that City might deserve to have their titles stripped for what their owners did, but he still would not want to accept the trophy himself.
