Rooney slams Martinez comments

Wayne Rooney has criticised Lisandro Martinez for claiming that the Manchester United hierarchy did not help the players enough in the transfer window. Defender Martinez spoke out after United lost 2-0 to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday. He insisted that director of football Jason Wilcox should have brought more quality into the team over the summer.

That explosive interview has drawn heavy criticism from United legend Rooney. Drawing on his own playing days, Rooney explained why the public outburst was wrong. He told Amazon Prime that it is disrespectful to his teammates and to the young players in the dressing room who are looking for guidance from experienced players.

A difficult season for United

Manager Michael Carrick has won just one of seven games this season, and United have lost three of their past five outings. Even so, Martinez spared Carrick from blame and instead pointed the finger at the executives of the club.

Martinez admitted that the players have to do more, but he still demanded more investment from the top. He stated that other teams brought in many players and argued that United did not do enough to evolve their squad from last season. Carrick refused to be drawn on the claims when reporters asked him.
