Regulator warning

The Independent Football Regulator will have absolute power to force Manchester City owners to sell if they are ultimately found to have run the club improperly. The watchdog chair, David Kogan, spoke about the matter on a podcast.

City have been found guilty of circumventing Premier League rules by an independent commission. The commission found they set up sham commercial arrangements to inflate revenues or reduce costs by over £900 million over a nine season period. They were also found to have made concerted efforts to stop and frustrate the Premier League investigation into those arrangements.

Owner response and appeals

David Kogan told listeners it was premature to talk about any action his organisation might take because City have lodged an appeal against the original commission verdict. However, he confirmed the IFR had the power to force a sale by club owner Sheikh Mansour if that was felt appropriate.

When asked if an owner could refuse to divest, Kogan replied that they have absolute power to do so. He also stated he would resign if there is any political interference in any investigation the IFR may undertake into City.
