The New Face in Golden State
The Golden State Warriors have high hopes for their newest rookie, Yaxel Lendeborg. Drafted at number 11, the 24 year old forward is already making a strong impression on veteran stars Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. During a pickup game before training camp, Lendeborg quickly read Curry's screen to score an easy dunk, drawing loud praise from his teammates.
The Warriors originally wanted Arizona guard Brayden Burries, but the Milwaukee Bucks took him at number 10. Golden State quickly selected Lendeborg instead. At 6 foot 9 and 241 pounds, he brings much needed size to a roster currently missing injured players Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody.
From College Star to Starter
Lendeborg had a successful college career, transferring from UAB to Michigan, where he won a national title while averaging 15.1 points and 6.8 rebounds. After initially getting feedback that he needed to improve his work habits, he turned things around by spending constant time in the gym.
Head coach Steve Kerr has been so impressed that he placed Lendeborg straight into the starting lineup during the preseason. Kerr praised his attitude, calling him unbelievably coachable. Kerr also stated that Lendeborg is already one of the team's best players and will see plenty of playing time this season.
Rookies Have to Learn
Despite his fast start, Lendeborg still faces some growing pains on the defensive end. In preseason games, he has struggled with his defensive stance, occasionally giving too much space to shooters like Rui Hachimura. Draymond Green has already shared some tough love and advice with the rookie to help him adjust to the fast pace of the league.
Assistant coach Frank Vogel is working closely with Lendeborg to help him understand complex defensive schemes. The young forward is eager to learn, regularly asking his veteran teammates questions to help speed up his development.
