A Big Deal for Podziemski

The Golden State Warriors and starting guard Brandin Podziemski have agreed to a five-year, $110 million contract extension. His agent Bill Duffy confirmed the agreement, which helps the team avoid restricted free agency next summer. The fully guaranteed contract includes a trade kicker and a mutual option in the final 2031 to 2032 season. This unique option lets either side opt in, but not opt out, of the final year, which opens the door for new extension talks during that offseason.

Podziemski is 23 years old and enters his fourth season with the team. The Warriors selected him 19th overall in the 2023 NBA Draft, making him the first pick of general manager Mike Dunleavy. He will earn $5.6 million in the upcoming season, which is the final year of his rookie deal. His salary then jumps to $18.9 million in the first year of the new extension. Keeping that initial salary manageable was a key negotiation point as the team protects its future cap space.

Role and Durability on the Court

Expectations are relatively low for the Warriors entering the regular season because they are missing several top players. Starting wings Jimmy Butler III and Moses Moody are rehabbing serious knee injuries, and Kristaps Porzingis is out indefinitely with a health issue. Despite these setbacks, Podziemski provides rare durability. He played in all 82 games last season, setting career highs in points per game with 13.8, made three pointers, assists, and steals.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr values the guard for his consistent contributions and calls him a connector. Podziemski is an elite rebounder for his position and ranks near the top of the league in charges drawn. While he faced some struggles last season while taking on a higher usage role, he enters this year back in a complimentary role next to Stephen Curry.
