Walker Kessler Believes Rebuilt Lakers Can Build a Nasty Defense

A New Defensive Identity

The Los Angeles Lakers have been known for their offense since Luka Doncic arrived in 2025. However, new center Walker Kessler believes the team is about to become a major force on the other end of the court. After just one day of training camp, Kessler declared that the Lakers are going to be a nasty defensive team.

Kessler, who joined the Lakers from the Utah Jazz this summer, pointed to the team's perimeter defense as a major strength. He described his new teammates as smart players and ball hawks who can apply intense pressure.

Rebuilding After Big Changes

The Lakers have struggled defensively under coach JJ Redick, ranking below average on that end of the floor during his first two seasons. Following a busy summer that saw the departure of veteran star LeBron James, the roster has been rebuilt.

The team now features Doncic, Austin Reaves, and Kessler alongside defensive specialists like Jarred Vanderbilt and Matisse Thybulle. Other additions include Quentin Grimes, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Collin Sexton, Ziaire Williams, and veteran backup center Kevon Looney.

Redick has made defensive principles his main focus for training camp. He praised his wings for setting a physical, disruptive tone on the first day of practice.

Protecting the Paint

At 7 foot 2, Kessler brings serious rim protection, having averaged 2.4 blocks per game over his first four seasons. Doncic noted that the paint is closed when Kessler is on the floor.

The Lakers once boasted the league's top ranked defense, but they slipped to 20th last season after trading Anthony Davis to Dallas. Kessler is confident they can turn things around and compete with Western Conference powerhouses like the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs. He believes their connection will make them true contenders.
