Benched by Mourinho
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho left Vinicius Junior out of the starting lineup for the LaLiga match against Villarreal on Saturday. Mourinho replaced the forward with Yan Diomande, explaining that Vinicius has struggled to find his best form this season.
Vinicius watched the opening minutes from the bench with the game tied at 0-0. He eventually entered the match in the 52nd minute, and Diomande broke the deadlock at the Bernabeu ten minutes later to give the hosts the lead.
Red card drama
Vinicius thought he had secured the victory when he scored from a Jude Bellingham pass to make it 2-0. Mourinho even sprinted onto the pitch to celebrate with his players.
However, a VAR review revealed that Vinicius pulled the hair of Villarreal player Nathan Saliba during the buildup. Referee Isidro Diaz de Mera overturned the goal and showed Vinicius a straight red card, which angered the Madrid bench.
Real Madrid had to play the closing stages with ten men. Mourinho's side managed to defend their slim advantage and secure a 1-0 victory.
