Health Scare at Bayern
Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany is undergoing further tests in hospital after collapsing during a training session. The 40 year old Belgian was watching a reserve team session on Friday when the incident happened.
Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl confirmed that Kompany is in stable condition. Doctors are currently working to find the exact reason behind the collapse. Eberl explained that initial tests provided some answers, but more tests are required before anyone knows when the coach can return.
Struggling With Illness
Kompany has been dealing with a viral infection since last week. His assistant Aaron Danks mentioned on Tuesday that the illness had affected the manager's legs.
Kompany stayed seated on the bench for the full match when Bayern beat Leipzig 6-1 last week. He then missed a training session and a news conference on Tuesday to rest at home. However, he returned to manage the team from the touchline during a 2-2 draw with Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday.
After that European fixture, Kompany admitted he tried to push through his illness instead of listening to his body. Eberl spoke to Kompany and his wife on Friday following the collapse.
Out for Weeks
Eberl made it clear that there is no fixed timeline for Kompany to come back to work. He stated that the manager will only return when he is fully fit and suggested the recovery process could take weeks rather than days. He said they are not talking in terms of days, but weeks.
Since joining Bayern in 2024 from Burnley, Kompany has won two German league titles and the German Cup. He also led the club to the Champions League semifinals last season. In addition, he is nominated for the Johan Cruyff Trophy for the best coach of the year, which will be announced on Monday.
Bayern play Freiburg away in the Bundesliga on Sunday without their manager on the touchline.
