A risky bet on Murray
The Minnesota Vikings are 3-0, but their quarterback situation is far from settled. After trading away former top pick J.J. McCarthy to the New York Giants on Monday, all eyes are now on Kyler Murray. Murray is playing on a one-year contract with a no-franchise tag clause, meaning the team cannot force him to stay in 2027. Both sides have just six months to decide if they have a long-term future together.
So far, Murray has only played one full game and a few snaps of another. His stats are not great. He has completed 52.9% of his passes for 186 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions. His quarterback rating of 17.0 ranks 37th out of 38 quarterbacks who have started a game this season.
Adjusting to a new style
Despite the poor numbers, there are reasons for patience. Sunday's 23-16 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was Murray's first full game since October 2025. He has also only played three series with star receiver Justin Jefferson.
General manager Nolan Teasley said he is excited about Murray's trajectory in the offense. The team is still adjusting to his unique playing style. Right tackle Brian O'Neill pointed out that blocking for Murray is different than blocking for pocket passers like Kirk Cousins or Sam Darnold. O'Neill said there is no internal clock for the offensive line now because Murray can scramble to extend plays, like his 12-yard run to convert a third down against the Buccaneers.
