A Dominant Performance in San Antonio
Victor Wembanyama posted career highs of 52 points and 24 rebounds to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a narrow 112-111 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night. He also added eight blocks in a massive effort that secured San Antonio their sixth straight win.
The big Frenchman set the tone early, scoring 10 of the Spurs' first 12 points with two dunks and six free throws. By the end of the first quarter, he already had 15 points, nine rebounds, two blocks, two steals, and an assist.
Historic Numbers and Defensive Impact
By halftime, Wembanyama had compiled 29 points, 15 rebounds, and five blocks. That made him the first player since the NBA started tracking play by play data in the 1996 to 1997 season to hit at least 25 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks in a single half.
His defense was just as impactful as his scoring. During one second quarter possession, Wembanyama blocked three shots in 13 seconds, rejecting attempts by Cooper Flagg and P.J. Washington before De'Aaron Fox recovered the ball. San Antonio was plus 23 with Wembanyama on the floor, but minus 22 when he sat on the bench.
Joining NBA Legends
Wembanyama became only the second player since official block tracking began in the 1973 to 1974 season to record at least 50 points, 20 rebounds, and five blocks in a single game, joining Bob McAdoo from 1974. He also matched Wilt Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor as the only players in league history to post at least 50 points and 20 rebounds in a one point victory.
The Spurs needed every bit of his production. Mavericks forward Naji Marshall scored 22 points, P.J. Washington added 21, and Cooper Flagg chipped in 19 to keep Dallas close throughout the contest.
Tension in the Final Seconds
Wembanyama scored two key putbacks in the final two minutes and 39 seconds, though he struggled from the foul line by going one for four in the final two minutes and 10 seconds. That opened the door for Dallas to respond.
Kyrie Irving, who finished with 29 points for the Mavericks, had a chance to win the game late. However, his contested 15 foot turnaround jumper with three seconds left failed to fall, allowing San Antonio to hold on. Dylan Harper scored 21 points for the Spurs, while Stephon Castle added 17 points and 10 rebounds.
