A costume tradition returns to San Antonio

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama resumed his popular custom of wearing viral Halloween costumes on Saturday. Arriving at Frost Bank Center, the 22 year old center dressed as Geralt of Rivia from his favorite book series, The Witcher.

In the book series, Geralt of Rivia is a solitary hunter who travels around taking down monsters in a world where humans can be more dangerous than beasts. Wembanyama shared his passion for the books, noting that after reading seven books, he feels like he knows the characters like friends or family members. He added that it is a great series and his personal favorite.

Looking back at previous Halloween outfits and stats

Wembanyama skipped his costume tradition last year because the Spurs did not have a game scheduled on Halloween. At the time, he expressed regret that fans would not get to see an outfit. This year, he made up for lost time in front of the home crowd.

The last time he arrived at an NBA arena in a Halloween costume was in 2024. That night, the Frenchman dressed as No Face from Spirited Away, wearing an all black one piece outfit and the character mask at Delta Center in Utah. He followed that up on the court with 25 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, five steals and five blocks in a 106-88 win over the Utah Jazz. That performance was the second time in his career he recorded at least five in five statistical categories.

His tradition originally started during his rookie year in 2023 at Mortgage Matchup Center in Phoenix. He dressed as the fictional supernatural creature Slenderman before putting up 18 points, eight rebounds and four blocks in a 115-114 win against the Phoenix Suns.

Teammates join in on the Halloween festivities

This Halloween was Wembanyama's first time playing a game at home on the holiday, and several San Antonio teammates decided to join in on the fun. Point guard De'Aaron Fox and his family came dressed as characters from the Disney film Toy Story. Meanwhile, Keldon Johnson kept his holiday tradition alive by dressing up as a cowboy.

Backup center Luke Kornet was undecided the day before Halloween about his outfit. Kornet said he might wear a suit to go as Captain Georg von Trapp from The Sound of Music because his children love the movie soundtrack. Kornet added that he needed to find the character's whistle to complete the outfit.
