Aguirre in talks to take over at Valencia
Valencia have stepped up talks with former Mexico manager Javier Aguirre to fill their vacant managerial post. A formal offer is expected to be made to the coach in the coming days as the club looks to quickly find a replacement.
The Spanish side sacked Carlos Corberán last Sunday following a poor run of results. They immediately appointed Braulio Vázquez as their new sporting director to lead the search for a new coach. Vázquez has been weighing several options, but Aguirre is currently the frontrunner for the job. Ernesto Valverde was also on Valencia's shortlist, but he declined to manage any team this season after concluding his tenure with Athletic Club.
Why Valencia need a savior
Valencia are in desperate need of a turnaround as they sit in the relegation zone. The team has picked up just four points from their first six games of the season.
Aguirre's potential appointment would be warmly welcomed by the Valencia squad. The players view him as a manager with proven experience in lifting teams out of tough relegation battles. He boasts an extensive career in the Spanish league, with previous managerial stints at Atlético Madrid, Osasuna, Espanyol, Zaragoza, Leganés, and Mallorca.
International pedigree
The 67 year old coach also has vast international experience. Aguirre guided Mexico to the Round of 16 at the last World Cup before they were eliminated by England at the Azteca Stadium. He managed the Mexican national team across three separate spells, including during the 2002 World Cup.
After he finished his latest deal with Mexico, his assistant and national team legend Rafael Márquez took over as head coach. Aguirre has already fielded approaches from other clubs, but returning to Spain is his preferred option.
