Early Exit for Pepi
PSV Eindhoven striker Ricardo Pepi suffered an early injury during his club's Dutch Eredivisie match against FC Twente on Sunday. The forward lasted just eight minutes on the pitch before his afternoon came to an abrupt end.
Pepi raised his hand to the bench to signal for help and sank to the turf. He had to be substituted immediately, which will cause major concern for both his club and his national team. This setback comes at a bad time for the forward who was looking to build momentum.
Pochettino's Selection Problems
The injury comes at a difficult time for United States manager Mauricio Pochettino. Pepi was named in a 28 player squad for the upcoming international matches. Players were expected to report for duty on Sunday, the same day Pepi got injured.
The U.S. team has a busy schedule ahead. They face Peru in Orlando on September 26, followed by Chile in St. Louis on September 29. They then play Mexico in Glendale on October 3, and Canada in St. Paul on October 6. Pepi's injury could force Pochettino to change his plans.
Missing Stars and New Faces
The U.S. team is already short of options in attack. Christian Pulisic is missing from the roster, having only just returned to fitness for AC Milan. Folarin Balogun is also absent from the squad, despite making his first appearance of the season for Monaco on Friday.
With top stars missing, Pochettino has turned to youth. He called up Cavan Sullivan, the 16 year old who is playing well in MLS for the Philadelphia Union. The other forwards in the squad are Cole Campbell, Justin Ellis, and Julian Hall. Pochettino will now have to rely on these younger players if Pepi is ruled out.
