Two nations battle for MLS starlet

Inter Miami midfielder Alexander Shaw is at the center of an international battle. Both Colombia and the United States want the youngster to play for their Under 20 national teams. Both countries are hoping to secure his services for the upcoming U20 World Cup in 2027.

Success with the United States

Shaw has already tasted success on the international stage. He previously played for the United States youth national team in the 2026 Concacaf U20 championship. He helped the American team reach the final after a perfect group stage.

During that tournament, the United States team picked up victories against Haiti, El Salvador, and Cuba. They did not concede a single goal during those matches. Shaw found the net himself, scoring in the 5-0 victory over Cuba. The tournament ended with the United States finishing as runners-up after they suffered a 2-0 loss to Mexico in the final.

Colombia interest and club contract

Colombia has also shown strong interest in Shaw. The South American nation has called him up to their Under 20 squad in the past. However, Inter Miami declined those requests because they happened during the Major League Soccer regular season action.

Despite this, Shaw has spent time around the Colombian senior team. He joined them as a sparring partner under manager Nestor Lorenzo while the squad trained in Miami during the World Cup.

At club level, Inter Miami recently secured Shaw's future. The MLS club signed him to a contract that runs until the end of the 2026 season. The deal includes options to extend through June 2027, the 2027-28 season, and the 2028-29 season. He has made five appearances this season and scored a goal in a big 7-1 win against CF Montreal.
