A busy match at Villa Park

Aston Villa had to settle for a point after a 2-2 draw with Brentford at Villa Park. Yehor Yarmoliuk opened the scoring for the visitors in the 10th minute. Nicolas Jackson quickly equalised for Villa less than 90 seconds later with his second goal in as many games.

John McGinn put Villa in front during the second half. However, Brentford bounced back when Kristoffer Ajer scored his first league goal since March 2024 to seal the draw.

Manager reactions to the result

Villa boss Unai Emery admitted he was sad after the final whistle. He stated that to draw at home is not a good result and they expected to dominate the ball more than they did. Emery also noted that his team conceded more goals than expected.

Brentford manager Keith Andrews felt his side could have won or lost the match. He mentioned that it felt wrong playing with an empty stand during the North Stand redevelopment at Villa Park, but he was still pleased with how his team performed.

Defensive struggles and progress

Villa lost England international Ezri Konsa to Arsenal during the summer, which proved a huge blow to their backline. The team has only managed to keep one clean sheet this campaign and has conceded 11 goals so far.

Emery remains optimistic despite the defensive issues. He explained that some players are still adapting and getting minutes, meaning the club will need time to work hard and improve.
