Injury details and on field changes

New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough is playing through two broken bones in his non throwing hand. The second year quarterback suffered the injury on Oct. 5 during a 45-24 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

The breaks are in his left hand, forcing him to tape his ring and pinky fingers together. He also wore a bandage and a protective glove against the Minnesota Vikings last week. The injury could take a couple of months to heal, but Shough has not missed playing time and has been a full participant in practice.

The issue has altered how he operates on the field. Shough had to hand off the ball using the opposite hand than he normally uses, and he is expected to do the same against the New York Giants on Sunday.

Pressure mounts after poor start

The injury added to a tough stretch for New Orleans. Shough struggled last week against a Minnesota defense that ranks second in the NFL, passing for a career low 96 yards with two interceptions in a 23-13 loss. That defeat dropped the Saints to 1-4 on the season.

Team owner Gayle Benson publicly criticized the organization last Tuesday, calling the 1-4 start not acceptable. She called out head coach Kellen Moore and general manager Mickey Loomis. Shough said he shared her frustration but added that he thinks the Saints are going to have a really good chance to go on a run here.

Shough has completed 66.8% of his passes for 1,299 yards this season, which is the seventh most in the NFL. He has attempted 205 passes, second most in the league, and has been sacked 13 times in five games.
