The Suspensions
Washington Nationals catcher Francisco Rivero and free agent pitcher Raudi Perez received 56-game suspensions on Friday. The penalties followed positive tests for a performance-enhancing substance under baseball drug programs.
Both players tested positive for Stanozolol. Rivero was disciplined under the minor league program, while Perez was disciplined under the program for minor le球员 assigned outside of the United States and Canada.
Player Backgrounds
Rivero is 18 years old and signed with the Nationals in July for a bonus of 250,000 dollars. He has not played in any minor league games yet.
Perez is 19 years old and previously signed with the Padres in January for a 25,000 dollar bonus. He recorded a 0-4 record with a 7.09 ERA and one save across six starts and eight relief appearances in the Dominican Summer League. The Padres released him on September 10, meaning his suspension will begin once he signs with a new major league organization.
Broader Context
Thirteen players have faced discipline for drug violations this year, including two under the major league agreement.
Atlanta outfielder Jurickson Profar received a full-season suspension on March 3 after a second offense for testing positive for exogenous testosterone and its metabolites. Free agent outfielder Max Kepler received an 80-game ban on January 9 for testing positive for Epitrenbolone, later signing with Arizona and returning to the major leagues on June 26.
