Supporting the starter
Tua Tagovailoa is settling into his new role as the backup quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons. After Michael Penix Jr. led the team to an impressive 35-14 win against the Green Bay Packers last Thursday, Penix has secured the starting spot. Tagovailoa is ready to help the young quarterback in any way he can.
Tagovailoa said his job right now is to do everything he can to make sure he is not the reason Penix fails. He plans to assist Penix with film study, extra throws, and any questions he might have. He explained that this support is what his job description entails right now.
The injury setback
Tagovailoa started the season as the starter because Penix was still recovering from left ACL surgery. However, Tagovailoa suffered an oblique injury during Week 1. During a practice on September 10, he felt discomfort in his side and had to sit on the grass.
He missed the next two games, which third-string quarterback Cooper Rush started. The Falcons lost both of those games. Tagovailoa said he first felt the pain the day before but tried to work through it, thinking it was just his back locking up. He is feeling much better now, even though he is not completely at 100 percent. He was off the injury report last week and active as the backup.
A fresh start in Atlanta
The Falcons signed Tagovailoa to a one year contract worth 1.3 million dollars after he was released by the Miami Dolphins. Miami took a record 99.2 million dollar hit to release him after he threw 15 interceptions in 2025.
Tagovailoa still views the situation as a competition, but he knows Penix is currently the starter. If Tagovailoa does start a game this year, the Falcons will become only the third team since 1991 to start two left handed quarterbacks in the same season.
