The Anthem Incident

President Donald Trump criticized LeBron James for disrespecting the United States after the star appeared to continue his warmups during the national anthem. The event happened before Philadelphia played the Knicks in New York on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden. James practiced a golf swing and jump shot while the song played.

While James lined up with his teammates, most of them stood still. Trump posted a video of the moment on social media, calling James a total disgrace and stating that he should apologize to military veterans and the country.

History of Tension

Trump and James have traded public criticisms for years. In 2017, James wore shoes with the word equality written on them and called the president a bum. James also stated that the president did not understand how many children looked up to him for guidance.

In 2018, after a television host told athletes to shut up and dribble, James responded that he meant too much to society and the youth. He mentioned sports legends like Muhammad Ali and Bill Russell as athletes who spoke up for equality. James also won an award in 2020 after leading the Lakers to a title and encouraging people to vote.
