Two Years of Waiting
Wednesday marks exactly two years since an independent commission hearing began examining the financial charges against Manchester City. The Premier League has accused the club of breaching its financial rules with more than 100 charges.
These charges were first laid in February 2023, but the league's investigation actually started way back in 2018. Even though years have passed, no outcome has been announced yet. Manchester City continue to deny all the allegations.
Legal Experts Speak Out
Sports barrister Nick De Marco has commented on the long wait. He wrote on social media that it is a most incredible delay. He pointed out that people often argue sports arbitration is quicker and more efficient than using the courts, but this case shows otherwise.
De Marco is not personally involved in the case. However, another barrister from his firm, Blackstone Chambers, has worked with Manchester City. That barrister is Lord David Pannick.
Premier League Response
Premier League chief executive Richard Masters spoke about the situation last month. He admitted the process has taken longer than he expected. However, he noted that the case does not often come up when he talks to top-flight clubs.
Masters stated that the process will resolve itself and that the league must allow it to reach its natural conclusion. He added that the independent commission needs the time and space to do its work, as the league's job is to present the evidence and establish the truth.
