Payback in Philadelphia
Carolina Panthers tight end Tommy Tremble scored a 19 yard touchdown from Bryce Young in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 25-14 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Right after catching the ball, Tremble pointed his finger at Eagles defensive back Cooper DeJean.
That action brought a taunting penalty from the referees. It set up a longer 48 yard extra point attempt, which second year kicker Ryan Fitzgerald missed wide right. Tremble admitted after the game that his reaction was retaliation for a hit DeJean delivered on tight end Mitchell Evans during the previous play.
How the clash started
The trouble began on a five yard run by Chuba Hubbard. DeJean and Evans got tangled up, sending Evans to the turf hard. Referees handed DeJean a 15 yard penalty for unnecessary roughness.
DeJean stated he was only trying to stand up while Evans was on his back. Evans joked about the hit later, saying he started cramping in mid air before landing on his back. Tremble felt the action against Evans was uncalled for, though he acknowledged he should not have retaliated and expects to receive a fine next week.
A big day for Tremble
Tremble finished the game with four catches for 46 yards and two touchdowns while lining up in multiple positions, including fullback. Before the touchdown, Young told Tremble that he would target him on the play. Young now has 11 passing touchdowns through the first five games of the season, the most by a Panthers quarterback in that span.
Selected in the third round of the 2021 draft, Tremble is in the final year of his contract. Wide receiver Jalen Coker praised his teammate after the win, calling Tremble the heart and soul of the team.
