Thunder Decline Topic Contract Option
Oklahoma City Thunder have decided not to pick up the contract option on Nikola Topic for next season. The decision means his 7.4 million dollar deal will expire, turning the point guard into a pending unrestricted free agent next summer.
While Topic sees his option declined, Oklahoma City made a different decision regarding two of their other players. The team announced that they are picking up the contract options for both Jared McCain and Thomas Sorber.
Medical Setbacks Since Draft Day
Topic originally entered the league as the 12th pick in the 2024 NBA draft. Despite his early promise, his time with Oklahoma City has been plagued by major health issues. Over the last three seasons, he has managed to play in only 10 total games for the team.
His struggles began before he even stepped onto an NBA court. Topic suffered a knee injury prior to being drafted, which forced him to miss the entirety of his rookie season.
Battle With Cancer and NBA Debut
The setbacks continued into his second year with the team. Topic was diagnosed with testicular cancer during the preseason, causing him to miss another large portion of the campaign.
He had a medical procedure to address the cancer last October, underwent chemotherapy treatment, and eventually worked his way back into physical shape. Topic finally made his NBA debut on Feb. 12 of last year, going on to feature in 10 games overall.
Recent Surgery and Uncertain Timeline
Topic is currently working through another recovery process. The Serbian point guard underwent back surgery this past summer, and the team says there is currently no timetable for his return to action.
With Oklahoma City choosing not to activate his option for next season, Topic will now focus on getting healthy before entering unrestricted free agency next summer.
