Raphinha in Great Form
Barcelona forward Raphinha has made a brilliant start to the 2026/27 season. After moving from the wing to a central role to replace Robert Lewandowski, who left for MLS side Chicago Fire, the Brazilian has scored 12 goals in just seven LaLiga matches. This includes back to back hat tricks in his last two games.
His incredible form puts him ahead of big names like Kylian Mbappé, who has seven goals, and Erling Haaland, who has five. Last year's winner, Harry Kane, has only scored three times so far. Yet, Raphinha is not currently leading the European Golden Shoe standings.
The Surprise Leader from Latvia
The player at the top of the leaderboard is Joseph Ede Oloko. The striker, who is 25 years old, has scored 25 goals in 27 league games in Latvia's top division. He has played for Tukums 2000 and FK Liepāja this season.
Oloko's great form has earned him his first call up to the Benin national team. After upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Burkina Faso and Mauritania, he will travel to Buenos Aires for a friendly match against Argentina, which will serve as Lionel Messi's farewell game.
How the Points System Works
The Golden Shoe is not decided purely on the number of goals scored. A coefficient system is used to make it fair across different leagues. Goals scored in Europe's top five leagues are multiplied by two. Leagues ranked between 6 and 22 have a 1.5 multiplier, while lower leagues like Latvia's have a multiplier of one.
Because of this, Oloko's 25 goals give him 25 points. Raphinha's 12 goals in Spain are multiplied by two, giving him 24 points. This leaves the Barcelona forward just one point behind the leader.
The Summer League Advantage
Oloko and other players in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe benefit from playing in summer leagues. These competitions run from March to November to avoid the cold winter weather.
This means these players have played most of their season already. While they have a major head start, players in the major European leagues are only a few games into their schedules. Raphinha could easily take the lead before the summer leagues finish their campaigns in November.
