Broken Promises in Los Angeles

When Jim Harbaugh joined the Los Angeles Chargers in January 2024, excitement was high. The team had won just five games in 2023, and Harbaugh promised multiple championships. He called star quarterback Justin Herbert his crown jewel and promised to protect him while building a dominant running game.

But three seasons into their partnership, those promises remain unfulfilled. The Chargers are currently winless after three games, and their offense is the fourth worst in the NFL, averaging just 14.7 points per game. Instead of being protected, Herbert has been hit 391 times since 2024, which is the most in the league. The team has also allowed 112 sacks in that period.

Rushing and Protection Issues

Harbaugh has always been known for strong rushing offenses. His former team, the San Francisco 49ers, averaged 139.6 rushing yards per game between 2011 and 2014. However, the Chargers have struggled to replicate that success. Since Harbaugh arrived, the team ranks 16th in rushing yards per game at 115.9.

Injuries and poor offensive line play have hurt the team. Center Tyler Biadasz suffered a season ending ACL injury in training camp, and guard Mekhi Becton was released after just one season. This season, the team's pass block win rate of 45% ranks 27th in the league. This has forced Herbert to scramble more, leading to a career high 498 rushing yards last season.

Struggles in Big Moments

While Harbaugh led the Chargers to consecutive 11 win seasons and playoff berths, those seasons ended in disappointing fashion. Herbert struggled in the biggest moments, throwing costly interceptions and missing receivers.

Harbaugh recently challenged his quarterback to be better as they prepare to face the Seattle Seahawks. Herbert acknowledged the pressure, stating that the team is not where they want to be and that it starts with him.
