The Fight for JJ Gabriel

Manchester United are dealing with the fallout after 15 year old forward JJ Gabriel decided to leave Old Trafford. The young attacker has not made a competitive first team appearance yet, but losing him is a massive blow for the club. Gabriel has been in United's academy since he was 11, and top clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and rivals in the Premier League are already trying to sign him.

United have a proud history of developing young players. They have named at least one academy graduate in every matchday squad since October 1937, a run of 4,368 matches. Keeping hold of these players is becoming much harder. Gabriel was close to leaving in summer 2025, but United's director of football Jason Wilcox persuaded him to stay. However, with Gabriel turning 16 on October 6 and becoming eligible for scholarship forms, the club knew another battle was coming.

Brexit and the Local Transfer Battle

The battle for young English talent has intensified since the United Kingdom left the European Union. Before Brexit, Premier League clubs could sign European players at 16. This is how United signed Alejandro Garnacho from Atletico Madrid, and how Arsenal signed Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona.

Now that this option is closed, clubs must focus on local talent. This has turned areas like northwest England, where United, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Everton compete, into what one source described as a nightmare. Clubs are desperate to recruit players as young as seven to get them into their academies before formal registration at age nine.

Rising Costs and Player Power

Running a top academy is expensive, with Category 1 setups costing more than £2 million a year. To attract the best young players, some clubs reportedly offer perks like chauffeured limousines or executive match tickets.

Even though 97 percent of players in these academies never make a Premier League appearance, those who show promise hold a lot of power. Some young players are demanding first professional contracts worth £50,000 a week.

For Gabriel, the issue seems to be a lack of first team opportunities. He played in a preseason friendly against Atletico Madrid but was not registered for the Champions League match against Sabah FK on September 10. Soon after, the teenager removed all mention of United from his social media accounts, signaling his desire to move on.
