Texas Rangers miss out on playoffs after final day defeat

A Quiet Ending

There was no champagne or loud music in the Texas Rangers clubhouse on Sunday. Instead, the players spent the evening saying goodbye to each other as their season came to an end. The Rangers fell just one game short of securing a postseason spot on the final day of the campaign.

Texas needed to beat the Minnesota Twins and hope the Houston Astros lost to the Athletics to claim the AL West. Neither result went their way. The Rangers suffered a 6-4 defeat against the Twins, while the Astros secured a dominant 9-0 victory over the Athletics. This left Texas with an 80-82 record, just one game behind Houston.

Failing to Reach the Top

This marks the third consecutive year that Texas will watch the postseason from the sidelines. Since they won the World Series in 2023, the team has struggled to put together a winning season. Over the last three years, they have recorded win totals of 78, 81, and now 80.

First-year manager Skip Schumaker spoke about the disappointment. He said that the team has to find a way to get back to winning. He admitted that they simply did not win enough games this year and need to figure out how to correct that in the future.

Road Woes and Missed Opportunities

The final weekend of the season highlighted the issues that have troubled the team all year. Texas entered the weekend tied with Houston but lost two out of three games to the Twins. Meanwhile, Houston won two of their three games against the Athletics to seal the division.

The Rangers struggled away from home, finishing the season with a 35-46 record on the road. They also struggled against weaker opposition, going 33-38 against teams with losing records. Schumaker took responsibility for these struggles, stating that the team was not good enough on the road or against teams they should have beaten.

Shortstop Corey Seager hit his 20th home run on Sunday but finished with a career-low OPS of .736. Seager noted that his offseason will be focused on finding a way to get one extra run and one extra out to turn those close games around.
