Injury Ends Season

Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin has a torn patellar tendon. Coach Dan Quinn announced the news on Tuesday, confirming that the injury will end the season for the 31-year-old player.

McLaurin sustained the injury during the first quarter of a Monday night game against the San Francisco 49ers, which ended in a 23-17 loss for Washington. Medical staff placed an air cast on his left knee and carted him off the field.

The Play

The injury happened on a third-and-9 play with 2:16 left in the first quarter. McLaurin attempted to cut sharply to the outside while running a route, and quarterback Jayden Daniels was sacked on the same play.

Before exiting the game, McLaurin caught a 27-yard pass on the team's opening drive, which led to an early field goal. He currently stands second on the team with 15 receptions, holds a team-high 230 receiving yards, and has scored one touchdown this season.

Background And Future

McLaurin previously missed Washington's Week 4 game against the Indianapolis Colts due to a hamstring injury, and he sat out seven games last year. Prior to last season, he recorded five consecutive 1,000-yard seasons between 2020 and 2024.

He signed a three-year contract extension before last season. His salary cap hit is scheduled to be $34 million in 2027 and $39.5 million in 2028, leaving the team with decisions to make regarding a restructure or release.
