A Shock Result at Highbury

Fleetwood Town created history on Tuesday by knocking Arsenal out of the Carabao Cup. The League Two side secured a 5-3 penalty shootout win after the match ended in a 1-1 draw, sparking a massive pitch invasion at Highbury.

Aaron Loupalo-Bi gave Fleetwood a shock lead in the 21st minute. Arsenal responded after halftime by bringing on Martin Odegaard, and Viktor Gyokeres quickly equalised to level the score.

Cool Under Pressure

Nineteen-year-old defender Conor Haughey stepped up to take the decisive penalty after Jay Lynch saved from Bruno Guimaraes. Haughey rifled his shot into the top left corner to seal the victory.

Despite his young age and the magnitude of the match, the Northern Ireland Under-21 player showed no nerves. He admitted after the match that he had not even practised penalties beforehand. Haughey explained that growing up in Belfast taught him to stay confident and take everything in his stride.

Managerial Reactions

Fleetwood manager Matt Lawlor expressed disbelief at the result, pointing out the massive differences in budget and quality between the two clubs. He praised his players for digging in and holding firm, especially after Arsenal's Max Dowman was sent off in the 85th minute for a petulant kick.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta congratulated Fleetwood on the upset. He stated that his team created enough chances to win the match but failed to capitalise on them. Arteta added that he could not fault the attitude and intensity of his players despite the disappointing exit.
