The end of an era in Boston

The long partnership between Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown in Boston ended during the summer when Brown was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. Brown was drafted in 2016 and Tatum joined a year later. Together, they helped the Celtics reach the Eastern Conference finals in five of eight years, made the Finals in 2022, and won a championship against Dallas in 2024.

Following Boston's 107-103 win over the New York Knicks in their home opener, Tatum spent most of his postgame news conference addressing the situation. Brown had recently posted a cap emoji on Instagram after Tatum said in a YouTube video that he was just as much caught off guard by the trade as the rest of the world.

Clearing the air on internet drama

Tatum expressed frustration with the ongoing internet narrative and social media commentary. He stated that people focus too much on drama rather than celebrating what they accomplished together in Boston.

"I don't have any animosity or beef or ill will towards him," Tatum said. He added that the situation is not like the historic tension between Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant on the Los Angeles Lakers. Tatum mentioned that he reached out with calls and texts the day the trade happened, believing that personal communication is better than talking over the internet.
