Seattle Adds Swanson to Staff

The Seattle Mariners are adding Tanner Swanson to their coaching staff as their new bench coach. Swanson moves to Seattle after working as the New York Yankees catching coach and field coordinator.

The announcement came two days after the Seattle club introduced Jason Kanzler as their new manager. Swanson is a native of Washington state, so the move brings him back to his home area as he joins Kanzler on the bench.

A Proven Track Record with Catchers

Swanson originally joined the Yankees coaching staff for the 2020 season. Prior to his move to New York, he spent three seasons working as the minor league catching coordinator for the Minnesota Twins.

He earned high regard within the Yankees organization for his work with catchers. A key example of his success is starting catcher Austin Wells, who established himself as a premier defensive catcher. Wells had moved up through the farm system with lingering questions about his long term future behind the plate before working with Swanson.

International and Management Experience

Swanson also gained coaching experience outside of Major League Baseball. He served as the bench coach for Great Britain during the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

He also spent time managing a big league team during a regular season game. In July, Swanson served as the acting manager for the Yankees in a game against the Tampa Bay Rays. That opportunity came after Yankees manager Aaron Boone and bench coach Brad Ausmus were both ejected from the game.

A New Coaching Pair in Seattle

Swanson has a relative lack of bench experience, but that did not stop the Mariners from bringing him in. The Mariners chose to pair him with Kanzler, who has never managed a team at any level in his career.

The 36 year old Kanzler had been working as the Chicago Cubs director of player development before Seattle hired him. He was brought in to replace former manager Dan Wilson, a longtime catcher who was fired following a disastrous 2026 season.
